How to choose the right towbar wiring kit?
Before fitting a towbar, it is important to choose the right wiring kit. Even among universal wiring kits, there are two versions: 7-pin and 13-pin.
The choice depends mainly on what you intend to tow.
7-pin or 13-pin: what do you need to know?
The law requires the use of a 13-pin wiring kit whenever the towed load exceeds 750 kg.
Furthermore, certain types of equipment – such as caravans or certain trailers with additional features (reversing lights, interior power supply, 12 V accessories, etc.) – must use a 13-pin wiring kit.
Thanks to its additional pins, a 13-pin wiring harness offers more features:
+12 V power supply after ignition,
Reversing lights,
Power supply for accessories (fridge, interior equipment, etc.).
What is it used for?
You might think that a bike rack would be fine with a 7-pin wiring harness. However, more and more models with integrated lights require a 13-pin harness to be compatible.
If you use your vehicle for multiple purposes (bike rack at the weekend, caravan in the summer, trailer the rest of the year), then the 13-pin harness is the most versatile choice.
This type of wiring harness is becoming increasingly common on the French market and can even be an asset when selling the vehicle.
Why choose SBS 13-pin wiring harnesses?
Professionals particularly appreciate SBS 13-pin wiring harnesses, especially thanks to their built-in relay.
As soon as the vehicle’s voltage exceeds 13 volts, the harness automatically activates a 20 A relay (supplied in the kit), which replicates the function of a “+ after ignition”.
The SBS 13-pin harness offers both contact-activated and constant power supply: a real advantage for caravans and horsebox vans.
